Done and Delivered

Way back in July I was working on a runner for my daughter’s birthday. It didn’t get done by her birthday, which was expected due to starting it too close to the date. And then I ran into the problem of the length of the table is longer than anticipated, which caused other issues. I have been working on it over the last few months, but part of the problem was deciding exactly was I was doing. I finally figured it out and finished it!

To make the runner longer I planned to put an insert in the center, but what that insert was going to look like I had trouble deciding. I had the edgings done for a normal rectangular runner back in July, though I never attached them because I didn’t know how I was going to end up cutting the material. I finally came up with an oval for the insert.

This picture shows the center with the edging pinned to the material, so it looks pretty wonky. You can see that it is pretty large. One of the issues of coming up with the shape was to somehow make a pattern of the size I wanted. I finally used a serving platter. Then I had to sew it, oh boy.

The center edging pattern isn’t exactly like the end pieces due to the curve. I also used size 10 for the blue (Wedgewood Dark, Lizbeth #656) in it where the end pieces I had used size 20, though the red (Terra Cotta, Lizbeth #673) and white (Natural, Lizbeth #602) were in size 10. Why I had to make all the edgings so complicated I don’t know! Simple rings and chains would have gone so much faster!

After I got the center this far I kind of stalled out. I was afraid of making a mistake with the truck material or coming up with something I couldn’t finish. My sewing skills are minimal, mostly just straight(ish) lines. The two sides were going to be attached to the curved center. What had I gotten myself into? I hemmed and hawed with this for weeks – ok, months – before just doing it. I did cut out a paper pattern first, to test out the look.

I finally sewed the two sides and figured a way to attach them to the center. I’m hoping the tatting and the cute material will distract everyone from looking too closely at the sewing, LOL!

The ends were much easier! Why didn’t I keep the center edging more like this? I just have to keep changing things up!

This is the finished runner on my table. It turned out nice. Her table is a rectangle so the ends will hang just a little differently. This patriotic truck-themed runner birthday gift was supposed to be for July and Independence Day, now she’ll have it for next year. I had jokingly told her I might have it done for Veteran’s Day, November 11, which amazingly I did. I finished it yesterday and took it to her today so she could put it out for tomorrow.

My daughter loves it! She sent me pictures of it on her table and it looks good. I’m so happy she’s happy with it and that I was able to deliver it before Christmas. Or next July.

Distractions

I’ve been doing a lot of debating on my next steps on my daughter’s runner. I have been working on it, just not necessarily making much progress. I’m pretty sure it will be a Christmas present now, I might have it done by then.

This is not to say I haven’t been tatting or otherwise crafting. There have been a lot of things to keep me busy.

For the fun of it I made coasters for the people in my department at work. None included tatting as most are men and I’m not sure they would appreciate it. Not saying some men wouldn’t like it, just I don’t want to go to that much work for anyone that I don’t know would appreciate it. I’d prefer to give gifts that the recipient likes, not just what I like.

I had fun looking for material that I thought each one would like. They were appreciated by all of them. The little yellow character is an inside joke with one of my co-workers.

Another distraction is wanting to give a gift to a friend at church, so I made another cross bookmark.

I like the pattern I came up with but not how it works up in this thread which is Lizbeth #113 Jewels in size 20. I think the colors muddle the center so much you can’t appreciate the pattern or the thread. I did start another cross with a single-color thread but made a mistake big enough I decided to start over. Then I had other distractions come up, so it is not done.

The other distractions were birthday presents. I forgot they were coming up and had to hurry to find something for them. I gave both of the birthday girls money, but I think that can be very impersonal even if it is something they want. I decided to give them each a little something more.

One of the young ladies likes green of any shade. I looked through my stash and found Lizbeth #667 Green Orchid Med and #684 Leaf Green Med in size 20. Of course, I couldn’t make up my mind which pattern to do but finally settled on this one. She was very happy with it.

The other young lady likes shades of purple. I found Lizbeth #632 Purple Med and #646 Purple Iris Lt. in size 10 in my stash. As both bookmarks needed to be done the same day – the next day – I found I was running out of time. I came up with this pattern, which when made in size 10 was long enough in the short amount of time I had left. I didn’t get to see her open it but I was told she liked it.

I’ve enjoyed my recent distractions. I really should be distracted to do more work around the house, but those aren’t nearly as fun.

Birthday Table Runner

I mentioned in my last blog post about making a table runner for my daughter’s birthday. I didn’t get it done in time for the 4th of July or her birthday, but I thought I would have it done by now. But, no, I don’t. It is taking longer than expected, but not because I didn’t have the edgings done. It got a lot more complicated.

I found this cute patriotic material at JoAnn’s in June. My daughter usually decorates for the different holidays and I thought she’d like it. Then I had to see if I had thread that would work with it. Christmas-y red wouldn’t work, and I didn’t think that white would work well, either. I had these colors on hand, and think they will work as an edging. They won’t be laying on top of the material, just hanging off the edge.

I started with the red, Lizbeth 673 Terra Cotta in size 10. The first two rows came out more open than I expected, so I added the blue, Lizbeth 656 Wedgewood Dark in size 20. That was interesting, adding it to the middle of the two completed rows. It came out okay. Then a row of Lizbeth 602 Natural in size 10. I thought I was done.

Then I looked at the length of the material I planned on using, a full two yards, 72 inches. With a half inch hem on each end it would have a finished length of 71 inches. Maybe the edging was a little short? So I added a row, which didn’t add a lot of length but gave a more finished look (?) to it.

Yay! Ready to sew up the material and add the edging.

Then I confirmed the length of her table. 70 inches. Hmm. I’m not liking how the finished runner would end up laying on the table.

My daughter and I are discussing what we want to do now. Options would be: 1) cut the material short and make a shorter runner with all of it on the table, or 2) make an insert to lengthen it so the ends hang off the edges of the table. We’ve come up with an idea, now to play with it and see where we end.

Now that more tatting is in the forecast, I needed to order more threads. I’m almost out of the Terra Cotta and I don’t have the Wedgewood in size 10, which I’m thinking I’ll need. I had a bit of a panic when I went to order these at Handy Hands and found out the Terra Cotta in size 10 was out of stock. Luckily, Tatting Corner still had some. Yay!

At the rate I’m going, my daughter will be getting it for Christmas!

Dressing up for the neighbors

Well, dressing up a gift for the neighbors.
  
One of my neighbors had a birthday this last week.  I wanted to gift her with something but not something that would just sit around the house and need dusting.  Both she and her husband have health issues so I didn’t want to make or bake something that would be hazardous to their health, either.  Not saying I’m a bad cook or anything like that but I couldn’t remember what things they need to stay away from – sugar, salt, fat, dairy, red meat – you get the picture.  After thinking about it for a bit I hit on a gift idea – simmering potpourri.  I did a search on Pinterest looking for a recipe or ideas that used things I had on hand and came across one that called for orange rind, apple peel, cloves and cinnamon sticks.
I just happened to have cloves and cinnamon sticks in my cupboard.  I don’t always have apples and oranges sitting around but we had just picked up our order of apples and oranges from a local member of FFA (Future Farmers of America) who was selling them as a fund raiser (this is done yearly).  How about that, everything I needed. 
Now to package everything up nicely.  I have a package of lunch-sized brown paper bags that I thought would work – okay, not the whole package of bags, just one.  I didn’t want it to be naked, so I dressed it up with a bit with burlap, lace, and buttons, then added a sprig of evergreen (it was fake but it looked nice) and a bow.  I added one of my snowflakes to it but in such a way as it can be taken off and put on their tree.
Instead of sending just orange rind and apple peels I put in a whole orange and a whole apple; dropped in a palm-full of cloves and several sticks of cinnamon.  I printed out the directions and put it in the bag also.

I thought it came out nicely.  It smelled good just sitting in the bag.
My neighbor really liked the gift and the bag it came it.  I know they’ll like how it will make their house smell because I made some up for me, too.  Can I say I helped dress up their house for the holidays, too?

Travel tatting

We went to visit one of our daughters this weekend to celebrate one of the grandson’s birthday.  Our other daughter and her son were also able to come up, which made for a great weekend!  All the grandkids together equals not much time for tatting, at least while we were there (I don’t plan on it, either!).  We left on Friday evening, which meant in the dark as the sun now sets so early.  Almost five hours of driving time – in the dark.
I have a booklight, one of those that clip onto a book so you can read in bed or wherever in low light.
And the battery was dead.
But I did have a small, regular flashlight that worked just fine.  I just tucked it behind the seat belt across my chest. I had to re-aim it every little bit, but it put light where I needed it.
I didn’t want to try following a pattern in those conditions so my best bet was something that I could do without a pattern.  What better than a bookmark?  A very basic cross bookmark is the result of our drive. 
I also emptied a few shuttles by making birds, butterflies and flowers.
We left earlier in the day Sunday to come home so I had light to tat by for a while and I still did simple things.  I got several snowflakes done, which I’ll be putting on some items for the craft show that’s coming up in a couple of weeks.  I might have pictures of those next week.
We had such fun this weekend. As our daughters live so far apart the cousins don’t get to see each other often, but they got along great.  We’ll have another chance to get all together in a few weeks for Thanksgiving.  I’m really looking forward to it!

A birithday gift

A while back I found some material remnants, one of purple and a slightly smaller one of pink with gold sparkles.  I thought together they would make a cute skirt for my granddaughter’s second birthday gift.  Now, I rarely sew at all and usually only such things as straight lines when putting simple table runners together.  My bright idea was to make a skirt – without having a pattern.  Oh, yeah, real bright. 
So, about a week before her birthday I finally get started on the skirt.  I can’t find my roller cutter so have to cut the material with a scissors, guessing at how big to cut it.  I barely start sewing it together and my sewing machine breaks.  For several days I’m at a standstill with it, trying to find a sewing machine to use.  Then it dawns on me that there are a couple of machines at church that the ladies use when they quilt that I could use.  Finally, progress! It takes a lot longer than it should, or should I say I wanted, the skirt was finally together.  And then the tatting had to be sewn on (you didn’t think I’d give her something like that without tatting, did you?).   It was finished the night before the party 🙂 (Just in time!)
When I tried taking a picture of her in the skirt she got all silly and wouldn’t stand still.  It’s a good thing I got any decent pictures because about five minutes after this picture was taken she tried to be a big girl and put her cereal bowl in the sink, which is great, but it still had cereal and milk in it.  There was milk from her chin all the way to the floor. 
The thread is a size 10 white with gold filament, which looks good with the pink material.  The beads are only on about two thirds of the tatting, front and sides but not the back (she doesn’t have to sit on them).  I added the butterfly in the same thread so she would know the front from the back.
The skirt turned out wearable, which is all I could ask for. It’s plenty long enough and the waist is elastic and can be let out some as she grows.  Flaws and all I think it is a success.

Birthday gift

I made this cross bookmark for one of my Sunday School students who’s birthday was this week.  I had planned on making it several weeks ago but that was while I was getting ready for the craft show, so it got put off.  Then there was the week before Thanksgiving trying to get some neglected cleaning done before our daughter’s family arrived for the weekend.  Then there was Thanksgiving and all the get-togethers and dinners.  Sunday morning arrived and it wasn’t done yet!
Luckily I woke early, even before the grandchildren, and was able to get started on it.  I kept making mistakes on stitch counts and joins, and then the kids got up.  Just a few more distractions while I hurried to finish it before church.  Amazingly, I did it.
This is made with Lizbeth size 20 in #641 Lilac Dark for the rings and #633 Dark Purple for the chains.  The pictures, at least on my computer, come out looking like shades of blue, but trust me, they’re purple! I’m pretty sure she’ll like it as purple is her favorite color.  
I say pretty sure because after all that hurrying to get it done, her family was out of town for the holidays so she hasn’t seen it yet. Oh, well, it’s done.  Much better to have it done and her not there that the other way around!
We had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend with several dinners and lots of family. We don’t see much of some of the families that much anymore, which is sad.  Fortunately we still try to get together for Thanksgiving and Christmas and most are able to make one or the other, and if we are lucky, both.  Hopefully some that couldn’t make it for Thanksgiving will be able to come for Christmas.
Now things have settled down a bit, at least for a few days, and I can think what I still need to make and do for Christmas.  Unlike Diane I haven’t been getting any snowflakes made.  She has made some beautiful ones this year.  I need to get motivated and make some myself.

Barefoot Sandals

For the last several weeks I’ve been working on a birthday present for my daughter.  I’ve seen barefoot sandals on several blogs, including Nancy’s over at “New to Me”, and knew both my daughter’s would like them so I thought I’d give them a try.  I did it! I even finished them before her birthday(even more surprising!).
These are made with DMC thread, size 10 in dark blue with lots of pink and clear glass beads.  I started with the center of one of my snowflakes (this one) and actually, made the center like I was trying to make the heart – with a few more additions.  Then I added the toe loop and the ties. 
There is a beaded ring at the end of the ties.
I don’t usually use all that many beads when I tat so this was quite a change for me. It took almost the entire tube of beads to make up these sandals. And now I see that, in small letters on the tube, “color not permanent”. Great – not! Well, she’s my guinea pig, on orders to let me know her likes and dis-likes with these, or any suggestions she has to make the sandals better.  I’ll know next time to choose my beads more carefully.  So far she likes them a lot – I gave then to her Sunday afternoon and she wore them the rest of the day *grin*. I’m calling this #1 of my next 25 Motif Challenge.
More Encapsulation
I’ve done the next pattern in Sherry’s book Branching Encapsulation, the “Wisteria Necklace”.  I didn’t have the kind of bead stringing wire that she used for the necklace, so I used some wire I had on hand –  not the same thing at all.
It came out pretty well, though maybe not to wear.  It’s made with #684 Leaf Green Med size 20 and Cebelia size 30 pink #3326, as I still had those colors on the shuttles.

I’m now ready to start the next pattern, “Grapevine Edging”. This pattern takes five shuttles.  As most (all?) of my shuttles seem to have thread on them I thought I’d just use what I have already wound, which will help empty them.  It  will, of course, make the grapes look a bit strange, though. Sorry, Sherry, I need to get to the end of the book, and need to empty a few shuttles to use for my next project (Trees!).  Still have to do the “Bleeding Heart” pattern after the grapes before I get there.  Each pattern has been fun, and I can see me using these techniques in the future.  I’m definitely going to use Sherry’s tip of using a small ziplock baggy to keep the shuttles from tangling while making the grapes!
My next project is for a wedding but after that is a birthday present for my other daughter.  She has indicated that barefoot sandals would be quite acceptable.  I wonder if one of the techniques I’m learning from Sherry’s book would work on those?  Hmm… I’ll think on this as I sip a little tea today for Tatting Tea Tuesday.
